The boundary the public actually judges you on
Hoarding does three jobs at once. It keeps the public out of a working site, it screens activity, dust and stored materials from view, and it presents the project to everyone who walks past. On a public-facing scheme the hoarding is the most visible thing about the job for months.
The construction has to reflect that. Sheet material is fixed to a braced timber frame on posts set for the height and exposure, with framing on the site side, no climbable rails outside, and a ground line closed off so there is no gap to reach or crawl through. Wind loading on a solid run is significant, so bracing and post foundations are sized rather than assumed.
Access is designed with the hoarding, not cut into it later. Vehicle gates need to open clear of the footway, pedestrian gates need to be usable and lockable, and both need posts and framing capable of taking daily use by a busy site. Where the hoarding sits on a public route, sightlines at the gate matter for pedestrian safety.
We also plan for the fact that hoarding is temporary. Sections are built so they can be adapted as the job phases change, and removed cleanly at completion with the ground made good. Where the client wants graphics or painted panels, faces are prepared for that from the start.

It is usually set by what has to be screened and by any requirement from the client, principal contractor or local authority. Public frontages generally need full-height solid hoarding; a rear compound may need less. We agree the height against those requirements and against the wind loading the run will carry.
Yes. Faces can be painted in agreed colours and prepared so printed graphics, project boards or signage can be applied. It is worth deciding this before installation so the panel layout, joints and framing positions suit the artwork rather than cutting across it.
A solid run behaves like a sail, so bracing and foundations do the work. Framing is braced back on the site side, posts are sized to the height and set in concrete or into appropriate supports, and returns and corners are used to stiffen long runs. This is the part most commonly under-specified.
Yes, and on most larger sites that is how it works. Sections are built, moved and adapted as the works advance, with each stage leaving a secure closed line at the end of the day. Phasing is worth planning early because it affects gate positions and how much material can be reused.
Yes. Removal, making good the ground and clearing the material can be included, which is usually simpler than arranging it separately at completion. Where the programme has a tight handover date, we agree the removal window in advance so it does not sit on the critical path.
