Space usually decides it. A swing gate needs clear ground to open into and struggles on a slope or where vehicles queue close to the opening. A sliding gate needs a parking run alongside the entrance but handles wide openings and gradients better. On tight urban frontages a cantilever sliding gate is often the only workable answer.

Sometimes, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. The frame has to be straight, square and strong enough for powered operation, the posts and foundations have to take the extra load, and the ground has to be suitable. Where an existing gate is already sagging or dragging, automation will only accelerate the failure.

A powered gate has to be arranged so it cannot trap or strike a person or vehicle, which typically means photocells, safety edges where appropriate, correctly set force limits and a manual release for power failure. The arrangement depends on the site layout, so it is set out at survey rather than supplied as a standard kit.

Options include fobs or keypads for staff, intercom or video entry for visitors, free-exit detection on the way out, and timed opening during delivery windows. Getting this right stops the common outcome where a gate is propped open all day because it is inconvenient.

Openings used by HGVs dozens of times a day need heavier frames, rollers and hinges than a car park gate, and undersized posts or shallow foundations are the usual cause of early failure.
