Commercial runs use larger posts at closer centres, heavier boards, gravel boards at ground level and often concrete or steel posts on exposed lines. They also have to account for wind loading over long uninterrupted lengths, which is where lightweight domestic fencing typically fails.

That depends on the timber, the detailing and the exposure rather than a headline figure. Pressure-treated timber, posts set properly, gravel boards keeping boards clear of wet soil and capping to shed water all extend life considerably. We would rather specify a heavier construction than quote a lifespan we cannot stand behind.

Timber posts set in concrete are perfectly suitable on sheltered runs. On exposed boundaries, long runs, or where a fence has already failed once, concrete or steel posts with timber infill are the better answer because the post is usually what goes first. We advise per run rather than applying one approach to a whole site.

Standard close-board fencing gives a modest reduction because it blocks the line of sight, but genuine noise reduction needs a denser, gap-free acoustic construction with mass and no ground-level gaps. If noise is the reason for the fence, it is worth looking at acoustic specification rather than expecting standard timber fencing to do that job.
